Coffee Grinding: How to Find the Perfect Balance

Coffee grinding is one of the fundamental keys to a perfect cup, but there is no an universal rule. There are three main types of grind: fine, medium and coarse, and each affects the end result differently. If the grind is too coarse, the coffee is under-extracted, i.e. watery and tasteless. If, on the other hand, it is too fine, the coffee is over-extracted, bitter and too intense.

So what is the perfect grind? It depends. The secret is to experiment. A good indication is when, during extraction, you get 30 ml of coffee in about 25 seconds. This means that you have achieved the perfect balance between extraction time and particle size of the coffee.

Experimenting with different grind types will allow you to find the ideal combination for your machine and your preferences. At Torrcaffè we care about baristas knowing the art of grinding, which is why we offer training courses in our Coffee Valley Academy every month.
